Gundula Koething

Ministry: Nursing – Leprosy, HIV/AIDS, Palliative and Primary Health Care

Service: Long term

Gundula has been in South Africa since 2004 where she volunteers in the ASM Primary Health Care Clinic. It involves one mobile clinic in a new fast-growing rural community of South Africa as well as Mozambique and Zimbabwe nationals.

Since 2017, having met her first leprosy patient, Gundula has become increasingly involved with patients affected by leprosy in the province. She works in close partnership with one of the main local hospitals providing holistic care according to each individual’s needs. She is a volunteering member of The Leprosy Mission (TLM) in South Africa which has opened up avenues of support, and personal training.

Her passion is to be a voice for the voiceless and to care for the most needy and vulnerable. She volunteers for Sinani a local non-profit organisation who care for the orphans, vulnerable children and widows in the surrounding communities and sees to their medical needs.

For many years Gundula volunteered in a HIV/AIDS specialised clinic and headed up the clinic’s Home-Based Care Team. It involved nursing care to children and adults living with HIV/AIDS, and to patients in need of palliative care. The area where she lives and works – south of the Kruger National Park- has a high HIV/AIDS rate. Gundula specialised in HIV/AIDS and graduated from further studies in Primary Health Care and Palliative Care.
